My first official Blog

As this is my first official blog, I sit here unsure of what to say and how to properly blog. I have spent some time researching others blogs, and even read what Will Richardson had to say on blogs. I do agree with him that "writing teachers should write, and literature teachers should read, teachers who use blogs, should, well, use blogs." It is imperative that teachers become models of success to students. However, I am still unsure of whether using blogs in a third grade classroom would help my students to become better readers and writers when they are still learning fudamental skills. I do believe that students should be taught technological skills, but at what age should we begin to expect our students to post and reply to blogs on the Internet?

  1. Lora,
I have a 5th grader, crazy adept at using the internet. I introduced the idea to her about blogs yesterday. Now, she didn't know what they were, but was very excited about starting her own blog on some of the books she is reading. I know this is a little older than your 3rd graders, but I think the possibility is there, especially if led by a knowledgeable teacher! :)
On the other hand I can see your concerns. I guess if we can get the students enthusiastic about writing about something they are interested in, then it will be better than anything at all!

  2. I too am a 3rd grade teacher, and I completely agree with you about 3rd graders being too young for blogs. I agree with Shanae about the possibility of 5th graders and higher using blogs, and the fact that an experienced blogging teacher could integrate thme into the 3rd grade.

  3. I understand your point about 3rd graders being a bit young to use/develop blogs, especially if they are not technology proficient. Although some 3rd graders are excellent users of technology, others unfortunately, do not have the access to computers and the internet. The positive part of teaching basic technology tools to young students is that they often learn faster than older students do (such as myself)!
